6 steps to improve your active listening skills

      Step-1) Watch an English Movie for 10 minutes
      Step-2) Repeat the same segment of the movie with the audio muted
      Step-3) Repeat the same segment of the movie with captions disabled
      Step-4) Recap for couple of minutes after every step
      Step-5) Follow Steps-1 through 4 on an English news content
      Step-6) Try these steps on various English accents - British, American and Australian

Step-1: Watch an English movie for 10 minutes

  • Check how much can you understand the gist of the movie sequence and try to remember few keywords.
  • It is important to have full concentration and also having a headset and captions/ sub-titles enabled
  • Recap by noting the kwywords as you listen on a piece of paper

  • This step prepares you to build the skill of writing while you listen. It helps you to overcome the tendency of trying to note-down the entire audio

    Step-2: Repeat the same segment of the movie with the audio muted

  • Whilst watchin the sequence mentioned in Step-1, note the start-time and end-time of the segment.
  • In this step you should mute the audio and watch the same segment of the movie with the captions/ subtitles on
  • Check the notes of Step-1 with the captions/ sub titles on the screen... mentally, of course

  • This step prepares you to build the skill of reading while you listen. The outcome of this step is how to skim reading content while listening gains prominence

    Step-3: Repeat the same segment of the movie with captions disabled

  • This Step-3 may sound boring, but the most important step. The reason is due to the fact that you are revising your reading and writing skill gained in Steps-1 and 2 here
  • In this step you should disable the captions and watch the same segment of the movie with the audio turned on
  • Revise the notes of Step-1 and Step-2 and you will realise how your reading and writing while listening skills has seen a marked improvement

  • This step completes your skill-building of appropriate listening skills towards
